What happens if I get arrested?

If you or a friend are arrested and detained by the police, you are always entitled to free legal advice irrespective of your financial circumstances.

In most cases, we would advise you to consult one of our solicitors before you are interviewed.

We are one of a small number of solicitors in the Bath area who have a contract to provide free legal advice for criminal cases (subject to qualifying criteria). You can use this service even though you may have used the services of another solicitor in the past.

On request, the Police will provide you with the opportunity to telephone or request a meeting at the police station with your solicitor. You can use the services of the Duty Solicitor but unless one of our solicitors is on duty you may prefer to use our 24-hour emergency service on 07778 893836 which operates 7 days a week 365 days per year out of office hours. During normal office hours you can use our main switchboard number 01225 485700.

After your arrest, the police will either charge you, detain you without bail, release you on bail or release you without taking any further action.

What information do I need to prepare?

  • Charge sheet and the summons (if applicable)
  • Any documents or correspondence from the Court or the Police
  • Your National Insurance Number
  • Names and addresses of any witnesses
