Domestic violence - Frequently asked questions

My partner can be violent. How can I protect myself from domestic violence?

An order can be obtained from the court restricting one person's contact with another or restricting their occupation of a home/property. These orders are granted if the court is satisfied that the person applying needs protection. The orders are known as injunctions; they can be obtained very quickly and can be enforced by imprisonment.

What information do I need to prepare?

It is very useful to your legal advisor if you have made a note of all incidents (including dates if possible).

Do keep a diary of all events of abusive behaviour - whether verbal or physical. Please contact us immediately if you have suffered or are in fear of violence from your partner.

Costs / Funding?

We know it is important from the outset to provide you with full information relating to the estimated costs of a case. We will discuss that in detail with you. It may be that you will qualify for Public Funding and that will be assessed at your initial appointment.
